Beginnings
Five weeks ago, I began teaching once a week at an area middle school as part of my education practicum. It's been a blast.
It's a new beginning for me. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to begin. So let's talk about why I'm doing it.
I've decided to start this blog for the following reasons (Not in any particular order):
1. Keep a record of my experiences, for self development. I'm imagining that in the future I will be able to look back during moments of professional darkness and find inspiration, perspective, or even more soul crippling despair. At the very least, I'll probably be able to laugh at myself.
2. Write. I like to write. I think that the more you write, and the more honesty and authentically you write - the better you get at writing. Nothing reads worse than the smell of something that's been overly curated and perfectly constructed. So I guess I am trying to be more authentic here.
3. Have a space to unload my brain. Like Dumbledore's pensieve.
4. Write well enough that other educators and students find something to relate to in my blog. That would be cool, to write it all down and have someone, somewhere far away - find something they can relate to. I like helping people.
5. Teaching seems like it can really burn people out. So I'm hoping that if I do this, other people in the field will find something they can laugh at. I like making people laugh.
So that's more or less it. I want to keep a journal, write in it, and I hope that other people find it relatable. I'm not going to tell anyone that I'm doing this. I find that the more you tell people about creative projects, the quicker they die. There's something about secrecy and anonymity that generates production.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Goals:
1. Write in this thing once a week to start, immediately after my practicum. This means bringing my laptop to school. I find that it is imperative to jot thoughts down while they are fresh. Otherwise things fossilize and change in your head. When you return to access an idea, it is no longer the same idea that you felt. Gotta record things fresh.
2. Image dumps. I collect samples of student doodles, art, dumb ass answers on tests, etc. I plan to drop these into the image dumps at least once a month. I think they're fun to look at. Maybe I can provide some humorous context.
3. Maintain anonymity. I don't want anyone to know who I am, or where I teach. Inevitably, certain aspects will leak out. But having a cloak of anonymity will allow me to write more authentically, which speaks to one of the reasons I'm starting this thing.
That's it for post one.
